For the last decade I have used an Android phone as my GPS device. I've never, ever, had GPS signal loss, even with the phone sitting in the cupholder at the console. I bought (and still have) a Garmin Glo, which is an external GPS antenna. I used it for several months but quickly realized it only provided a minuscule improvement in accuracy. It is basically have two module, one is regular antenna, and another one is adapter for car with radiator antenna. Once install, you just plug regular GPS antenna to the car adapter, and power on. it will read the signal from GPS antenna, enhance it and then Re-radiating it out with it's antenna. This also easy to DIY, but I buy it instead. Have an old 4 inch Nuvi with external antenna as the Nuvi sits way back from the windshield on a sliding shelf in the dash.so both myself and the Navigator can see it.
