After I take a fief for the first time. Usually around clan tier 4. I consider becoming a vassal once I am T6 and maybe at least 5m cash, but more like 10m Becoming a Vassal too early leads to you caring too much before you have money and army to cover what you care for. As Merc, you win or you lose, whatever.
Recruiting minor factions needs an overhaul. The AI should not be able to recruit mercenary clan from the player faction, if they are at war and they should not be able to recruit via telepathy. We need telepathy skill too. In medieval times a King doesnt always travel around the world to find mercenary leader.
Non-aligned is for when your army is best suited to killing bandits and not ready for lords, and it's a good time to buy enterprises and focus on trading between towns. Joining a faction (as a merc or as a vassal when they'll let you) is best when you are capable of beating lords in a fight, and allows for marriage and fighting/gaining relation
No offence, but there's a lot here that could just be bypassed. Quests for notables are time consuming and give back absolutely awful money. A few tournaments and a bunch of bandit parties will get you enough dudes to become a viable mercenary pretty quickly. You want to be a mercenary. From there, workshops are a complete bust.
For example, if you wanted to become a mercenary for Sturgia, you could go to any vassal of Sturgia (make sure it is not another mercenary group) and say that you would like to enter the service of the ruler ( In Sturgia’s case, Prince Raganvad) then select the option that says “my sword is yours. For the right sum.”.

Pros. +2 settlement loyalty per day. Cons. -0.5 influence per day for non-ruler clans. Loyalty is another metric that players will need to nurture if they want to be as hands-off as possible with
Just hop into town, buy all the food, smack a rebel lord, then siege the city. Their food will be empty, and even if it takes a day or two to reach a lord and defeat them, I've never seen a rebel city have more than 3-5 days of food even if they get resupplied. Thanks I wasn't sure why it wouldn't let me attack.
Can't become a vassal? I am currently a mercenary for the southern kingdom with a clan rank of 2. however, when I go to the ruler, the offering my sword in vassalage option does not show up. is anyone else having this problem? Do you have good relation with him? Is your clan at war with people that the kingdom you want to join is not at war with.
I’m stuck in a purgatory of being simultaneously a vassal and a mercenary without the benefit of being able to leave at will that a mercenary has, nor any land or power of being a vassal. I’m married to a noblewoman who is the Stuart of a major city, but this apparently counts for diddley squat, not to mention I’m richer than half of the
